Step Back to Repulse the Monkey

(Yang-Style Taiji Long Form, Move 19)

I:  INVITATION

Come this way.

Follow the cinder path

between clipped hedges

to the terminus,

where rocks, precisely piled,

set off these cultivars, my columbine,

their lipstick-red largesse a centerfold.

Beyond is where design

falters, the fecund thicket,

myriad rot and rise, the tiny weeds

that mingle with the beetle,

with the ant, a lupercalia

where I am all undone.

No trespassing.

II:  ARCHITECTURE

Behind my door

is another door

and behind that

another.

One of the doors

bursts on your skin;

one of the keyholes

cries for wax and lead.

This one is hardest:

deadbolts of iron,

panels of ash.

Sing your way in.
